Internships

Explore opportunities to change the world

We encourage students to work for one of the many companies and organizations that include environmental issues as an important component of their work. Students can pursue an internship anywhere in the world during the summer, and can receive academic credit for a local internship during the fall or spring semesters.

Daniella Smith ‘20 is a 2018 UC Santa Cruz Doris Duke Conservation Scholar. This program is dedicated to the integration of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the field of conservation. Daniella spent the summer conducting multiple rapid research studies in a range of UC Natural Reserve ecosystems and National Parks.

Internships for Environmental Studies course credit

Students who wish to incorporate experiential learning  directly into their Environmental Studies major or minor can register for a 1-credit, graded internship (ENVS 1901).

Goals

An Environmental Studies internship allows  students to apply theoretical and technical information learned in the classroom by working directly with an organization in an environmental field.

Process

Under the supervision of a faculty sponsor, students are expected to spend 50 hours throughout the semester working on a defined project with an approved outside employer, which may include educational, non-profit, for-profit, and government organizations. Through a midterm check-in with the faculty sponsor, a final paper, and an evaluation from the internship supervisor, the Environmental Studies Internship combines work experience with reflection and critical analysis, providing students an opportunity to gain valuable insights on potential career pathways.

Registration & Evaluation

To register and apply the 1-credit (graded) course to their degree, students must submit an Internship Approval Form, approved by a faculty sponsor and the Director of Environmental Studies to the program office in Devlin 213 or envstudy@bc.edu.

At the conclusion of the internship, the intern’s supervisor at their placement will complete the Internship Evaluation Form and return it to the faculty sponsor.

List of Recurring Internships

Students  are not limited to programs listed here and are  encouraged to do their own research on possible internships. Please share information about internships you have discovered or participated in by emailing the program office at envstudy@bc.edu.Ìý
