Interested in helping someone learn English?

The Boston College Neighborhood Center (Ï㽶ÐãNC) is seeking Boston College students to teach English to adult immigrants through weekly conversation classes. Experience teaching or tutoring English is beneficial but not necessary as orientation is provided. This is a great opportunity for language and education majors.

Literacy Partnership Program

The Ï㽶ÐãNC Literacy Partnership Program (BLPP) is a children's literacy campaign whose mission is to promote literacy among Boston's elementary and middle school age students. Through the program,ÌýBoston College students (graduate and undergraduate) who receive work-study funds serve as tutorsÌýatÌýlocal schools, including:

  • St. ColumbkilleÌýPartnership School
  • The Steppingstone Foundation - College Success AcademyÌý
    Ìý

The average student works three to six hours per week with one or more children. All student volunteers receive orientation/training.

Strong Women, Strong Girls

The Boston College Neighborhood Center sponsors the Boston College chapter of the national Ìýprogram, which "champions the aspirations and potential of girls and women by connecting three generations through mentorship."Ìý

Strong Women, Strong Girls' innovative after-school model uses the study of contemporary and historic female role models, mentoring relationships with college undergraduate women, and skill-building activities in a supportive enviroment to encourage 3rd-5th grade girls from under resourced neighborhoods to "express their strengths and pursue their dreams."Ìý

Volunteer Tutoring

Our Ï㽶ÐãNC Volunteer Tutoring Program matches students from the Allston-Brighton community with Neighborhood Center volunteers for one-on-one tutoring with their school work. The students range in age from elementary school through high school. A commitment of one to two hours of tutoring per week is required.Ìý
