How a Ļć½¶Šć Alum Ended Up in G.I. JoeĀ

The beloved comic turned out to be the perfect medium for an important message.

As VP of global publishing at Hasbro, Michael Kelly ā€™94 may never have imagined thereā€™d be an opportunity to collaborate with his old Boston College Chorale buddy David Shapiro ā€™95, the chief medical officer at St. Francis Hospital in Connecticut. But when Shapiro became involved with the American College of Surgeonsā€™ Stop the Bleed Campaign, which seeks to teach bystanders basic techniques to stem bleeding in the event of an accident, he reached out to Kelly with a creative idea: Why not integrate the campaign into a G.I. Joe comic? Kelly, whose company publishes the comic book, loved the idea, and now, in its three hundredth issue, readers can learn the three-step process from a ā€œDr. David Scott.ā€ Shapiro said he was ā€œjoyfully surprisedā€ to end up as a character in G.I. Joeā€”he may be the first Ļć½¶Šć alum to have the honor.
